As the new term approaches, we find ourselves on the brink of new adventure as we are starting kindy and school soon! For many parents, especially those experiencing this for the first time, it’s entirely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. Rest assured, you’re not alone in these emotions, and we’re here to offer guidance and support every step of the way.

Understanding First-Day Jitters
As we approach the first day of Little Birdwings and Adventure Club, it’s completely expected that your little one might be feeling a bit jittery about stepping into the unknown. Nervousness often amplifies feelings about certain aspects they may not be entirely comfortable with yet. At Birdwings Forest School, we’ve witnessed this scenario countless times and have supported children through these feelings. It’s a natural part of the journey, and we’re here to navigate it together.
Building Strong Connections
Turning our attention to building strong relationships, our first term is slow and gentle. We recognize that after a break (particularly the long break over summer with Christmas and New Year and family and events!) children may need a bit of time to readjust to the routine of kindy and school. Hence, we’ve planned a simple and soothing beginning to our year, a gradual easing back into our adventures, ensuring a smooth transition for all.

Getting Ready to start
Transitioning back into a weekly routine after a long break is hard work! It can bring up a few big feelings. In this last week before we start you can help ease the transition back into weekly bush kindy by getting out and about for a few more nature adventures as a family. Wear the bush kindy clothes, put on the water shoes, practice walking with a backpack and packing a lunch box for the day. Meet up with friends and enjoy some nature play together.
Parental Confidence: A Guiding Light
Parents, you play a crucial role in boosting your child’s sense of confidence and independence! Your confidence can greatly influence how your child approaches their first day. Modeling assurance and a positive outlook can make a world of difference. Share in your child’s excitement, talk about the fun experiences they’ll have, and assure them that you’ll be there every step of the way. We can acknowledge the big feelings but return immediately to build a positive sense of play, confidence and independence.

Don’t forget your own needs in this adventure
Now, considering your own needs, this is a transition for you too! Plan something for yourself for your child’s first day. Organise a coffee date with friends, a bushwalk, a special treat for yourself. We know this experience is big for you too and the distraction and comfort will help. Plan a lovely busy day for yourself so that you can meet your child at the end of it brimming with confidence that they are adjusting to new experiences as well as you are.
A Supportive Community
We understand that this journey is not just about the children; we are a community. Reach out to other parents who might be feeling the same way. Share your experiences, tips, and encouragement. Building a supportive network enhances the overall kindy experience for both parents and children. Birdwings Forest School has a beautiful community, evidenced recently by the heartwarming turn up at our start-of-year working bee. We are here for each other.

Looking Ahead with Excitement
As we embark on this new term, we’re genuinely excited to welcome fresh faces and witness the growth and exploration that kindy brings. If you have any specific concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to find clarification. Together, we’ll make Birdwings a memorable and enriching experience for both you and your child.
